Seedballs - All You Need To Know

What are seedballs?

Seedballs are little balls of clay and peat-free compost that contain wildflower seeds.  There is no need to bury them, as the outer clay protects them and the peat-free compost will help germinate them.

You can just drop them onto soil or compost, either in the ground or in a pot, leaving at least 10cm between each seedball. They can be planted at any time of year, although the best times will tend to be spring and even autumn.

A bonus is that the clay helps to prevent birds, mice and insects from eating the seeds, improving the chances of these flourishing.  A dash of chilli powder is added to the seedballs to help deter our little slimy friends from munching your young shoots too.

Keep the seedballs watered, if the gold old British rain doesn’t do the job for you.  With some warmth, when we get it, the wildflower seeds inside the ball will start to germinate and sprout after about four to six weeks.

Then, just leave to flower and help our insects thrive.

Can I eat them?

You would think that this is rather odd question, wouldn’t you?  However, we have seen people thinking they are mini truffles!  Truthfully…  Human beings!

These absolutely shouldn’t be eaten, aside from the fact that they will taste absolutely disgusting, some mixes contain foxglove, which is toxic.

Are they safe for children?

Taking the above comment on consumption and foxgloves into account, the other seedballs are great as part of a child’s learning about nature and gardening.

Seedball packs

Cracker fillers

Most of our seedball boxes are designed with crackers in mind.  They mostly fit into our kits to make standard or large crackers, with many boxes matching our cracker designs.

We make sure to give you lots of different seed options, through the range, when we create these.

Weddings

Our range of seedballs includes many wedding designs, which are ideal as wedding cracker fillers or as table gifts – far more thoughtful than a sugared almond or a wrapped chocolate perhaps?

Eco credentials

The seedballs are completely environmentally friendly and, if anything, actually add the environment by allowing the seeds more chance to grow.

All packaging (unless in reusable tins) is card and fully recyclable.

Wildflower Seed Hearts

In addition to seedballs, many of our mini gifts and cracker fillers include paper hearts filled with wildflower seeds.

If you need some instructions to grow these, we have included these below…

  • Soak the paper hearts in water.
  • Then pace them in a pot of compost and sprinkle more compost on the top.
  • Keep the soil and paper moist in a warm and light environment.
  • Seedlings then need to be potted on and planted out in the normal way.

An alternative is to allow them to biodegrade in the ground during the Autumn season and then the seedlings will appear in spring, just like they were in the wild…
